The last thing Jesus said to His disciples before ascending into heaven was to go and make disciples of all the nations. (Matthew 28:18-20) So then it must also be possible for me to become His disciple!
Jesus Himself has called us to be a disciple, His follower. This is the greatest calling that a human can have. It is a life that leads to more abundant and eternal life. It is a life of growth in the things of God and transformation into the image of Christ. It is a way that must be walked on. It is a lifelong covenant with our Lord and Master, to follow Him on the way of life, wherever it might lead. Through trials and testing, to eternal glory and fellowship with Him.
Jesus’ disciples understood this when they immediately left everything to follow Him (Matthew 4:18-22). Like an athlete who makes sacrifices to attain the highest achievement in his sport, a Christian cannot be a true disciple of Jesus without giving up everything (Luke 14:26-27).
“… and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” Romans 8:16-18. To be an heir of God and a fellow heir with Christ is an immense promise. Have I truly counted the cost of being a disciple? Can I genuinely say that I am a disciple, with Jesus as my Master?
