Theme week: “Christ manifested in the flesh”

A look into what Paul calls “the mystery of godliness.”

This week ActiveChristianity will focus on a special theme: “Christ manifested in the flesh.”

Christology, the study of Christ’s nature and being, is perhaps one of the most hotly debated topics in Christianity, and has on more than one occasion caused the established Christian churches to split amidst much animosity. How distant from Jesus’ prayer, that they might be one, as He and His Father are one, and from the apostle Paul’s revelation of the church of Christ being one body, with Christ as the head!

The Bible itself is not unclear when it concerns this, yet Paul describes it thus: “And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.” 1 Timothy 3:16. Despite the words of the Bible, this fact, that Jesus, the Son of God, gave up his divinity and became a man in every respect is hard to grasp and hard to believe, especially if we look at the implications.

That he became fully man means that He also took upon Himself human nature, with an inclination to sin. It was in this state that He lived a life in complete victory over sin, opening a way back to God. He had emptied himself, but through this life as a human being He once again was filled with the whole fullness of the Godhead. (Philippians 3:2-5; Colossians 2:9) All those who follow Him on this way come to where He is ¬they can be partakers of the divine nature! (2 Peter 1:2-4) But this means living the life that He did – a life of victory over sin!

This week we will explore this theme more, with in-depth articles and testimonies from people for whom this revelation has been a life-changing experience.
