Audio Transcript: The Holy Spirit: Our Helper

The Holy Spirit is called by many names in the Bible.

Among these names, He is known as: The Spirit of promise, the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of power and the Intercessor.

As all of these things combined, He is for us, as Jesus described Him, our Helper.

Let’s have a look at some of these characteristics of the Spirit. And we can start with:

The Spirit of promise

When Jesus was on earth, He taught His disciples many things. When He left the earth, He gave His disciples the promise that He would not leave them on their own, but would send His Spirit to be their Helper.

The Spirit came to the disciples on the day of Pentecost. We can read about that in Acts 2.

God gives us the Holy Spirit when we commit ourselves to obey Him, and the promise is that, through obedience and walking in the Holy Spirit, we gain the fruit of the Spirit, which is things like love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and more.

But to come to this, we need help, and then we need:

The Spirit of truth

The Spirit reminds us of everything Jesus taught us – His commandments. He opens up and reveals the Word to us, so we can understand it. He gives us light and revelation – He leads us to the enemies in our flesh.

He shows us where our own lives do not match with God’s Word – He leads us to acknowledge and love the truth about ourselves, where we do, say and think things that aren’t pleasing to God. For example: He might remind us that Jesus said that we should love our enemies. The Holy Spirit shows us when we lack this. And then He becomes for us:

The Spirit of power

He gives us the power to overcome the lusts and desires of the flesh. When we walk in the Spirit, we get power to not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

The Spirit’s power is made perfect in weakness. We have to be completely surrendered to the Spirit in order to get His power. If we are willing to humble ourselves under His guidance, instead of working on our own ideas, opinions, and will, then He can help us.

In Romans 8:11, it says that the Spirit gives life to our mortal bodies. This is the power of eternal life that we get when we overcome sin.

Another way the Spirit gives us real help is as:

The Intercessor

He prays for us when we don’t even know what to pray for ourselves. He knows the things of God, and He comes to help us.

He leads us in the direction of the will of God – when we don’t know which way to go, and what to do, the Spirit leads us.

All of these aspects of the Spirit put together are what enable us to follow Jesus and overcome as He overcame. Then we get a good life here on earth and we are prepared for an eternity in heaven!
